[ARCHIVED] Firefighters Attack Fire in Tigard

At 5:28 am, TVF&R firefighters were dispatched to a reported fire at 15995 SW 74th Avenue in Tigard. First-arriving crews from Tualatin Station 34 and Tigard Station 51 made an immediate entry into the commercial building, where they found heavy smoke throughout and heavy flames near the back of the structure. Firefighters made a quick attack on the fire, while additional crews cut holes in the roof to remove heavy smoke and heat, and searched the building to look for possible victims. The building was quickly determined to be vacant.

The 14,000 square foot building housed three separate businesses. The building had a common attic space where all roof trusses were exposed. During the process of cutting holes in the roof to ventilate the building, firefighters discovered that several trusses had burned through. Concerned about the stability of the roof, firefighters were ordered to quickly finish their task and evacuate the roof.

In addition to crews being challenged by an unstable roof, interior crews had to pull a significant amount of ceiling tiles to access the attack space and extinguish the flames.

There is no damage estimate at this time. However, there is a substantial loss to the common attic space and roof, as well as contents in the structure. The building was not required to, nor did it have, a fire sprinkler system. No injuries were reported.

An investigator is onscene to determine fire cause and origin.
