Firefighters Keep Exterior Fire from Spreading into Washington County Home

Just after noon today, firefighters with Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue and deputies from Washington County Sheriff’s Office responded to reports of a roof on fire at a two-story home in the 2000 block of Northwest Jessamine Way in Washington County. A neighbor had called 911 and notified residents who were initially unaware that a fire was threatening their safety.

First-arriving firefighters were met by the homeowner who was using a garden hose to try and extinguish a fire that had started outside and quickly spread to the cedar shake roof. Firefighters immediately began to douse flames on the roof and search the inside of the home.

Fortunately, firefighters prevented the fire from spreading into the home’s attic and living spaces. They also removed light smoke, protected belongings, applied extra water to the home’s exterior, and used a thermal imaging device to verify that all hot spots had been sufficiently soaked.

A fire investigator has confirmed that the fire started near an outside yard debris container, but they were unable to determine the precise cause. The damage was limited to a small portion of the roof, and residents will be able to stay in their home.

Due to the high outside temperatures, extra firefighters responded to ensure adequate breaks and rehabilitation for everyone working. Whether fighting a fire or playing outside, TVF&R urges everyone to hydrate often and take frequent breaks to avoid heat-related illness.
