FLS FAQ Header
What do Fire Inspectors do?
Fire Inspectors conduct fire and life safety inspections of commercial buildings, such as restaurants, movie theaters, warehouses, automotive repair shops, business parks, factories, and stores. They collaborate with business owners and managers to ensure their buildings comply with fire safety codes, protecting occupants and firefighters.

Members of this team conduct fire investigations. They also review new construction plans to ensure first responders can gain access to water and all areas of a building in an emergency. Through the Youth Fire Intervention Program, the FLS conducts screenings and provides education to youth who misuse fire.

What education do I need to become a Fire Inspector?
To apply for the Fire Inspector position, you must first obtain your International Code Council (ICC) Fire Inspector I certification. This is a multiple-choice, 60-question computer-based test. The open-book test is based on the International Fire Code, the International Building Code, and IFSTA Fire Inspection and Code Enforcement books.

Does TVF&R have the International Fire Code, the International Building Code, and IFSTA Fire Inspection and Code Enforcement books I can borrow to take the ICC Fire Inspector exam?
Unfortunately, TVF&R does not have loaner copies of the recommended study materials. These resources can be purchased online or in stores and may be available at your local library.
