Just after 6a.m. this morning, callers to 9-1-1 reported smoke and flames at a condominium in the 14000 block of SW 76th Avenue in Tigard.
When they arrived, firefighters confirmed an active fire in a single-story building containing two condominium units. The fire had extended from an outside wall into one of the units. They quickly knocked down the bulk of the flames within the first ten minutes and spent another hour salvaging belongings, inspecting the shared attic space and mopping up hot spots.
One condominium sustained significant fire, smoke and water damage which displaced two adults. There was only minor smoke damage to the adjacent unit, but it remained habitable.
A fire investigator determined that the fire was accidental in nature and caused by improper disposal of smoking materials in a combustible container.
The American Red Cross is assisting the two displaced people with temporary housing and other needs.
