[ARCHIVED] Backyard Fire Spreads to Two Homes and Injures Three People

Firefighters work to extinguish fire on roof of house

Just after 10:20 a.m. today, Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue crews were dispatched to the report of a residential fire in the 11900 block of Southwest Lynnridge Avenue in Cedar Hills. Multiple callers to 911 reported seeing an exterior fire and smoke coming from the back of a home on a corner lot.

Firefighters arrived to find a single-story house heavily involved with flames coming through the roof and out the front door. A second alarm was called to bring additional units to the scene.

Firefighters quickly initiated a search of the home for occupants and fought the fire that spread to the side of an adjacent house. Firefighters split into two teams working to extinguish the fire in both homes while continuing the search of both residences for any occupants. Firefighters from Portland Fire & Rescue assisted on scene. Crews worked to contain the fire and prevented it from spreading to nearby trees and brush while also contending with a downed powerline.

Meanwhile, Washington County Sheriff’s Office deputies and Beaverton Police Department officers guided firefighters and paramedics with American Medical Response to two patients who were able to get out of the first home prior to firefighters’ arrival. Those patients were treated on scene and transported by AMR to a local hospital with serious injuries. An occupant of the second home was able to get out safely and was treated on scene. The third patient was not transported.

A TVF&R fire investigator responded to the scene and determined the fire started in the backyard of the first home and spread into the house, causing extensive interior damage and the roof to collapse. The radiant heat from the fire spread to the neighboring home’s exterior siding and entered the house through a window, causing significant interior fire and smoke damage. The investigator remains on scene to determine the cause of the backyard fire.

In addition to Portland Fire, AMR, Beaverton Police Department, Washington County Sheriff’s Office, and Washington County Consolidated Communications Agency (911 dispatchers), TVF&R was also assisted by Portland General Electric, NW Natural, and Washington County Land Use and Transportation.
