[ARCHIVED] Alert delivery driver calls in barn fire

Parrett Mountain Barn Fire

A day of seemingly routine deliveries took an unexpected turn for one delivery driver who arrived at 18750 SW Parrett Mountain Road in Sherwood. At approximately 12:26pm today, the driver called into 9-1-1 reporting a barn on fire. He reported to the dispatcher that he didn’t think anyone was home at the time.

Crews were dispatched and immediately responded to the scene. En route, the crew described seeing a smoke header indicating the possibility of a working fire. The fire was upgraded to a first alarm response that brought additional resources to the fire including water tenders to shuttle water for firefighting operations as nearby hydrants were unavailable.

Upon arrival, Engine 33 from Sherwood Station initiated an aggressive attack to fight the fire at the barn and control the fire from spreading to a nearby garage. Those successful efforts minimized the spread and damage to the garage and adjacent home. Crews were able to knock down the fire and remained on scene to check for hot spots and ensure the fire was extinguished. No injuries were reported.

In total, approximately 25 firefighters responded to the incident including firefighters from Newberg Fire and TVF&R volunteers.

The barn was approximately 40 feet by 100 feet in size and it was reported that among two vehicles stored inside were also some chickens. It is unclear how many chickens were inside the barn at the time of the fire.

A TVF&R investigator is working to determine the cause of the fire and damage estimates.
