[ARCHIVED] Young Man Being Recognized for Calm & Courageous Emergency Response

Bishop Roush, a student at the NWESD Pacific Academy in Beaverton, is being formally recognized for calmly and courageously rendering aid to his friend who suffered a seizure. Bishop Roush is enrolled in the Teen CERT Program in Beaverton (a pilot program between NWESD and the City of Beaverton – news story link) that he credits for teaching him the skills he needed to respond effectively during this emergency situation.

On October 11, 2013, Bishop and his friend were walking at a local mall when he noticed that his friend had stopped talking and looked as though he was in shock. Bishop believed his friend was going to fall, so he quickly eased his friend to the ground and used his recent CERT training to assess the situation. He ensured his friend was breathing, then turned him on his side and called 911. Even though he was nervous, he stayed calm and was able to provide all the necessary and pertinent information needed by the dispatcher to ensure the appropriate emergency personnel were dispatched.

Lisa Bates, LCSW at the NWESD Pacific Academy states, “Bishop demonstrated many of the core principles of this Teen CERT pilot program and we are extremely proud of him.”

When TVF&R paramedics arrived, Bishop was able to relay detailed information to them – just as he had been trained to do in his CERT classes. Because he stayed calm, utilized his training, and courageously ensured the safety and well-being of his friend until help arrived, TVF&R and dispatchers from the Washington County Consolidated Communications Agency will be honoring him during his Teen CERT graduation (event details listed below).

TVF&R is committed to helping our citizens reduce risks, be prepared for emergencies, and support their efforts in creating safer communities.
