At 5:07 p.m. today, Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue crews were dispatched to a report of a fire inside a warehouse in the 20000 block of Southwest 115th Avenue in Tualatin.

The first-arriving engine company reported smoke showing from a large roll-up door. An initial report from the business occupant said the business was performing a new product test on six large lithium-ion batteries, and the batteries were on fire.

Each battery was roughly 6 feet by 4 feet by 3 feet and contained a large amount of energy. The incident commander upgraded this incident to a first alarm, bringing additional fire resources to the scene.

Crews quickly isolated the fire. The building’s automatic sprinkler system played a role in containing the fire and helped minimize further damage to the building and other contents. Although fire containment was quick, complete extinguishment was challenging and took some time.

Due to the potential hazard of the product, the incident commander requested a response from TVF&R’s Hazardous Materials Team. The safety of the public, crews, and the environment were paramount.

The Hazardous Materials Team quickly directed and assisted with a water containment plan to minimize any environmental impact. The team also monitored air quality for safety and set up a decontamination process for crews that had direct exposure to the smoke and flames.

Occupants from surrounding businesses were evacuated as a precaution. No injuries were reported. A fire investigator responded to the scene to determine a cause.
