[ARCHIVED] Second-alarm Commercial Fire in Stafford Destroys Local Boat Manufacturing Business

Just after 2 a.m. on Wednesday, firefighters were dispatched to a commercial fire at 24601 SW Mountain Road in the Stafford area near West Linn.

From the bay of Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue's Mountain Road fire station, firefighters could see and hear the fire located less than a quarter-mile away. As they got closer, they realized that more than half of the large, metal building was engulfed in flames and a portion had already collapsed.

The building, estimated to be at least 13,500 square feet in size, included a barn, woodshop and work spaces where boats were manufactured or customized by Motion Marine.

First-responding firefighters hurriedly worked to retrieve belongings. They were able to save a boat with an estimated value of $300,000, as well as some vehicles and chickens before the heat and conditions became too unsafe.

A second alarm was called to bring more resources to the fire. Firefighters attacked the large volume of fire from the outside.

Since there are no fire hydrants in the area, water had to be shuttled from three sites, including Bridgeport Elementary School. A total of six water tenders were used to refuel a drafting site that supplied hundreds of feet of hose lines surrounding the building that did not have a fire sprinkler system.

Firefighters will likely remain on scene for several hours to extinguish hot spots. An excavator has assisted with roof and debris removal. Several hazards in the building included fuel, fiberglass, acetylene, ammunition and other chemicals used for manufacturing.

Fortunately, no one was in the building at the time of the fire, and no firefighters were injured.

While the value loss is high, there is no official damage estimate at this time. In addition to business items, the building stored many personal belongings of the business owner. The building was insured.

A fire investigator has conducted interviews but won't be able to examine material evidence until all the hot spots are extinguished.

At least 60 fire personnel responded to the fire, and TVF&R was assisted by Lake Oswego Fire Department, Clackamas Fire District and Portland Fire and Rescue. Incidentally, Motion Marine customized the water rescue boats used by TVF&R and Lake Oswego Fire Department.
