[ARCHIVED] TVF&R and Other Agencies Respond to Overturned Tanker Truck Leaking Gasoline on Cornelius Pass Road

Just before noon today, Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue crews responded to a report of a rollover motor vehicle crash involving a Ford F-150 pickup and fuel tanker truck along Northwest Cornelius Pass Road near Germantown Road.

The semi-truck and one of the two fuel tanks it was hauling overturned into a ditch and the tanker was leaking gasoline. Both drivers were able to safely exit their vehicles without injury prior to the arrival of firefighters and TVF&R’s Hazardous Materials Response Team.

Firefighters worked to secure the scene, contain and absorb spilled fuel on the roadway, and are now maintaining a safe perimeter.

NRC, a private contractor that specializes in cleaning up this type of spill, was called in to assist. Because the compromised tanker is on its side, the cleanup crew can’t directly access the port to offload the remaining gasoline from the tanker into a large tanker truck that is on scene.

The private contractor plans to pierce the overturned tank and create an access point to offload the gasoline. As a precaution for the offloading process, firefighters sprayed foam. Firefighters also remain on standby should the gasoline ignite.

Washington County Sheriff’s Office deputies and firefighters from Hillsboro Fire & Rescue and Cornelius Fire Department are assisting TVF&R crews at the scene. A representative from Washington County’s Department of Land Use and Transportation also responded to the incident.

Cornelius Pass Road is closed to traffic between West Union and Skyline roads. Northwest Germantown Road is closed at Old Cornelius Pass Road. Motorists are asked to avoid area. It is expected that the roads will remain closed for several hours.

No injuries have been reported, and the Washington County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the rollover crash.
