At 12:20 pm, Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue responded to reports of a residential fire at 11285 SW Tonquin Rd. in Sherwood. The fire was reported by a passerby who saw black smoke and flames venting from the windows of the single-story structure. When firefighters arrived on scene, they found the structure fully involved in fire and initiated a defensive fire attack.
Causing immediate concern for the fire commander was the fact that there were low hanging power lines involved in fire and a large propane tank on the east side of the structure. Additionally, a train was approaching and a large amount of smoke from the fire was blowing across the train tracks along SW Tonquin Rd. Railroad officials were promptly advised of the potential hazard. Both sides of SW Tonquin Rd. were closed to traffic during firefighting operations.
There were no other structures threatened by the fire. The structure, which was vacant at the time of the fire, was being used as an office for a business and not as a residence. The fire was brought under control at 12:48 pm.
A fire investigator is currently on scene and the cause of the fire is unknown at this time; however, the structure suffered significant damage. A valuation estimate of the fire loss has not yet been determined.
