A passerby was the first to call 911 at 8:08am this morning to report smoke billowing from a residence at 17990 SW Avalon Drive in NW Portland. Nearby neighbors tried to make contact with anyone that might have been home at the residence but told crews that they didn’t believe anyone was home. Enroute to the incident, responders from Station 64 could see a visible column of smoke and upgraded the incident to a first-alarm response bringing additional resources to the scene. The crew arrived within three minutes of being dispatched and began extinguishing the fire. Fire crews knocked down the fire within nine minutes of arrival. No other homes were threatened by the fire.
Additional crews performed a search of the home and confirmed that no one was home at the time of the incident. They did find a dog at the residence that was brought out to safety. No injuries were reported including the dog. Due to the damage in the home, two adults and one dog were displaced. The American Red Cross responded to the scene to provide them assistance. TVF&R crews were also assisted by Hillsboro Fire Department and TVF&R volunteers.
A TVF&R fire investigator responded to the scene and determined that the most likely cause of the fire is electrical failure in the attic space. A damage estimate is not available at this time.
