[ARCHIVED] Crews Contain Used Cooking Oil Leaking From Overturned Trailer on Cornelius Pass Road

Just after 11:20 a.m. today, emergency responders were dispatched to an overturned truck trailer that was leaking reclaimed cooking oil. Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue firefighters responded to the 12000 block of Northwest Cornelius Pass Road. Upon arrival, the engine crew from Rock Creek Station 64 found a truck trailer on its side. The cab of the truck hauling the trailer containing approximately 3,000 gallons of reclaimed cooking oil remained upright. No injuries were reported. At the time of the accident, the truck had been traveling uphill on a curve when its trailer overturned. Due to the nature of the call, TVF&R’s Hazardous Materials Team was called in to assess the situation and determine if the spill had contaminated two creeks in the area. As firefighters worked to contain an estimated 2,000 gallons of reclaimed cooking oil that spilled from the trailer’s tank, an initial investigation confirmed the spill did not contaminate nearby waterways. The used cooking oil flowed down approximately 100 feet of roadway and off a nearby embankment. Firefighters were able to contain the spill to a ditch running along railroad tracks at the bottom of the canyon. The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality was notified of the incident, and a cleaning company was called in to remove the oil from the roadway. Motorists are advised to avoid the area as crews continue to clean up the scene. A portion of Cornelius Pass Road and Highway 30 through Skyline were closed. TVF&R was assisted by the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office.
