At 1:49am TVF&R Firefighters and Tigard Police Officers were dispatched to a report of an explosion at the 76 gas station and food mart on 10775 SW Greenburg Road in Tigard. On arrival firefighters found a food mart bathroom that appeared to have had an explosion and sustained significant damage. While there was no active fire in the bathroom, crews discovered fire had extended through a false ceiling and was threatening the main part of the convenience store. Firefighters made quick access through the ceiling and extinguished the fire within a couple minutes. The food mart suffered some smoke damage, while the bathroom had significant damage.
While firefighters focused efforts on the fire, an initial investigation by police revealed that two males were in the bathroom at the time of the explosion. After the explosion, the men used an extinguisher to put out the bathroom fire and then transported themselves to Providence St. Vincent with injuries. Further investigation by Tigard Police and a TVF&R Fire Investigator uncovered that they were attempting to extract hash oil from marijuana using butane gas at the time of explosion. TVF&R Fire Investigator Jason Arn said, "process of extracting hash oil is very dangerous", as was the case with this explosion. Both men suffered severe burns and were transported to the Legacy Oregon Burn Center for treatment.
The TVF&R Investigator determined the fire was caused by a heat gun which ignited butane gas, causing a fire and explosion. The fire was contained to the bathroom and the adjoining storage room with smoke spread throughout the food mart.
The incident remains under investigation by the Tigard Police Department.
