At 1:51 pm, 911 received calls regarding a truck with smoke and flames coming out the bottom of the vehicle. Nearby crews from Station 60 and Station 61, along with a Battalion Chief, responded to the scene. They found a semi-truck with a flatbed trailer stopped in the middle lane of Hwy 26 westbound fully engulfed in flames. The driver was able to safely exit the vehicle and was uninjured. Crews extinguished the fire; then, in consultation with our hazardous materials specialty team, began creating dikes and dams on the roadway to protect the nearby storm drain from nearly 100 gallons of diesel fuel leaking from the truck. According to the driver, while driving on Highway 26 he noticed smoke under his hood and a loss of air pressure in his brakes. He then stopped the vehicle and saw flames underneath the hood. ODOT and Beaverton Police were on scene as well to complete fuel clean up and assist in traffic control.
