On August 15-16 and September 19-20, off-duty TVF&R firefighters will take to the streets to once again "Fill the Boot" for MDA. Firefighters will ask passing motorists to drop a donation into their fire boots...see below for locations. Firefighters hope to raise $60,000 for MDA!
“We know the money we raise definitely makes a difference in the lives of people affected by neuromuscular diseases, and that it helps them get the care they need,” states Local 1660 President Rocky Hanes. “Fill the Boot is a proud tradition for us, and it’s a great way for our firefighters to be in our community reminding residents that we are always ready to help.”
Donation Options:
• Donate at a "Fill the Boot" intersection (locations below) • Donate on-line
• Drop off a check at a TVF&R fire station or mail to our Command and Business Operations Center (make check out to MDA)
Where does the money go?
There are over 100 families in TVF&R's service area receiving support from the MDA. The money donated to our Fill the Boot effort is dedicated to the Columbia/Willamette Chapter of the MDA.
Some of the costs that the Muscular Dystrophy Association helps families cover include:
• Flu Shot $30
• Research $74 for every minute
• Support group session $100
• Assistance with repairs of durable medical equipment $500 average
• Sending a child to MDA summer camp $800

History
This is the 60th anniversary of Fill the Boot. IAFF is MDA’s largest national sponsor. IAFF support began in 1954 when the organization committed by proclamation to support MDA until a cure is found. IAFF raised $100,000 for MDA in 1955, and $1 million in $1970. Fire fighters continue to raise the bar in their fundraising efforts with $10 million raised in 1995 and $26.2 million in 2013. To date the IAFF has raised nearly $530 million for MDA.
