On May 20th, Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue (TVF&R) Fire Chief Mike Duyck accepted the Saving One Million Hearts Partnership Award from Dr. George Brown, President and CEO of Legacy Health. This award recognizes the highly effective collaboration between TVF&R and the Middle School Healthy Hearts Program, coordinated by Legacy Meridian Park Medical Center, to teach students hands-only CPR and the importance of making heart healthy lifestyle choices.
The Middle School Healthy Hearts Education Program is a free two-session class for seventh-graders in Tualatin, Tigard, West Linn, Wilsonville, Beaverton, Sherwood, and Lake Oswego schools. Taught jointly by Legacy nurses and TVF&R firefighters, teens learn the importance of good lifestyle choices, as well as hands-only CPR. This training is creating a generation of lifesavers; capable of providing confident assistance in case of a heart emergency. To date, the program has educated over 3,000 kids!
Proceeds from the Saving One Million Hearts Luncheon will benefit the Middle School Healthy Hearts Education Program and further the collaborative effort to create an ever-expanding network of community responders educated in saving lives.
