A commercial fire alarm from fire sprinkler activation was received by the 9-1-1 call center at approximately 8:07pm this evening that sent crews to the Pride Recycling Company at 13910 SW Tualatin Sherwood Road in Sherwood. Within minutes, additional calls to 9-1-1 from passing cars on Tualatin Sherwood Road described black smoke billowing out of the structure. The first arriving crew from Sherwood Station 33 found heavy smoke and two workers exiting the structure toward them. The workers provided general information about the location of the fire within the large 25,000sqft building. Firefighters initiated an aggressive attack of the fire to knock it down and keep the fire contained to one corner of the structure. Additional crews confirmed that everyone evacuated the structure safely. The two workers who were initially met by the first-arriving crew were evaluated by medical personnel on-scene for smoke exposure then released.
The structure is described as a material recovery facility and contained construction debris for recycling. With the assistance of Pride Recycling personnel, crews soaked the remaining debris with water to ensure the fire was extinguished and that it did not extend to any other areas of the building. The first-alarm fire brought more than 30 TVF&R firefighters to the scene including TVF&R volunteers.
A TVF&R investigator is working to determine the cause of the fire.
