[ARCHIVED] Could You Be The Match?

When most people think of bone marrow donations, they shudder and conjure images of painful procedures and lengthy recoveries. Even the prospect of being tested as a potential donor has outdated stigmas. The reality is much less scary. A simple swab of the cheek is all that’s needed to determine whether someone has the power to provide lifesaving marrow to fight the devastating impacts of cancer and autoimmune diseases.

The TVF&R family is all too familiar with the impacts of cancer. Since 2008, four firefighters have succumbed to this ruthless disease. Firefighters are exposed to carcinogenic contaminants from fires and hazardous materials incidents. These contaminants include combustion by-products such as benzene and formaldehyde, and materials in debris such as asbestos from older structures *. Currently another retired brother is battling cancer and has resolved to highlight awareness about the national bone marrow registry while he still can.

Joining the Registry is as easy as 1-2-3!

1. Meet the age (18-44), health, and weight requirements and be willing to help any patient in need. For more information click here .

2. Complete a registration form with contact information, health history questions, and a signed agreement to join the Registry.

3. Give a swab of your cheek cells so your tissue type can be added to the Registry.
