When TVF&R responds to emergency incidents, we use our sirens and lights, we exercise extreme caution when passing through intersections, and every firefighter in the apparatus is watching traffic from all sides. But, we need the cooperation of ALL drivers in order to arrive at an incident quickly and safely. Therefore, TVF&R would like to remind drivers:

• When you hear sirens and/or see an emergency vehicle approaching with flashing lights, safely pull your vehicle as far as possible to the right and stop until the emergency vehicle has passed. (Leaving a little distance between you and the vehicle in front of you when you’re driving will allow you more space to pull to the right when needed.)

• If you can’t immediately move to the right due to an obstacle or gridlocked traffic, you should stop your vehicle safely and begin watching for an opportunity to pull to the right as soon as possible.

• Keep distractions to a minimum and be aware of your surroundings. There are times when emergency vehicles may be forced to move between lanes of cars or drive against the flow of traffic, so it’s extremely important that you pay attention to the road and are prepared to safely get out of the way.

• Make sure your music is not so loud that it drowns out the sound of sirens.

Remember…during an emergency seconds count so…“Pull to the right for sirens and lights!” It just might be your loved one who needs our help.
