[ARCHIVED] Firefighters Respond to Two Calls of Toddlers Falling from Windows in Less Than 24 Hours

At 8:17 p.m. on Sunday, a 9-1-1 caller reported that a 2-year-old boy fell from a third-story window at a residence in the 19900 block of Southwest Monson Street in Aloha.

When Hillsboro Fire & Rescue arrived on scene four minutes later (providing mutual aid), the child had regained consciousness. Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue firefighter paramedics took over advanced medical care and determined that the child would be a trauma system entry.

Metro West ambulance transported the patient to Legacy Emanuel Medical Center.

At 12:48 p.m. on Monday, TVF&R firefighters responded to reports that a 3-year-old girl fell from a second-story window onto the concrete at a residence in the 19600 block of Southwest Boones Ferry Road in Tualatin.

When firefighters arrived on scene two minutes later, they began administering advanced medical care. The patient has been entered into the trauma system, and two TVF&R firefighter paramedics went with Metro West ambulance to Oregon Health & Science University to continue care while en route to the hospital.

TVF&R and Hillsboro Fire & Rescue urge families to take action today to prevent future window falls this summer.

What families can do today:
* Find out which of your windows may pose a fall risk.
* Keep windows closed and locked when not in use.
* Keep areas in front of windows clear of anything a child may climb.
* Enforce a Kid-Free Zone in front of all windows.
* Check out the STOP at 4-inch Campaign website: www.stopat4.com.

Next steps families can take:
* On windows that pose a fall risk, limit openings. STOP at 4 inches by installing child safety window stops that can be by-passed by an adult in an emergency.
* When buying new windows, research which manufacturers offer built-in child safety hardware.

If a child falls:
* Call 9-1-1, and don't move the child.
* Emergency responders are trained to properly stabilize and safely transport injured children.
