Community Risk Reduction
What is CRR?
Community Risk Reduction is a grassroots effort led by members of the fire service to encourage fire prevention and life safety education.
The goal of CRR efforts is to find ways to reduce the occurrence and impact of emergency events that often end up in a call to 911. This doesn’t mean we don’t want people calling 911 during a life-threatening emergency. We strive to find ways to prevent the emergency from happening in the first place.
Our top priority at TVF&R has been and always will be ensuring our communities are safe. By prioritizing CRR and encouraging others to value its importance, we can create healthy, safe and resilient communities and reduce the occurrence and impact of emergencies.
The 5 E’s of CRR
Education: What altering knowledge, attitudes, and awareness related to risks can do to impact behaviors.
Engineering: What technology solutions can do to help reduce risks of emergency events.
Enforcement: What passing, strengthening, or enforcing safety regulations can do to impact risks of emergency events.
Emergency Response: What can be done to provide the safest and most efficient emergency response.
Economic Incentive: What economic incentives or penalties could be used to encourage safer behaviors.
Community Education
CRR requires a collaborative approach. Risks are often something we can’t mitigate on our own. It requires a team effort that often will include involvement from our public sector partners, non-profit organizations, and private sector companies in addition to all of our community members.
