Where to Place Smoke Alarms

Smoke rises so proper placement is important for early warning. Make sure your follow your smoke alarm's manufacturer instructions for detailed instruction and placement.

We recommend:

  • Installing smoke alarms in every sleeping room or at a minimum, just outside in the hallway.
  • Ensure there is at least one smoke alarm on each level of your home, including the basement.
  • Avoid placing smoke alarms in the immediate cooking area of your kitchen. They should be at least 10 feet from a cooking appliance.
  • Steam from a bathroom shower can cause false alarms. Make sure smoke alarms have a little space just outside your bathrooms.
  • Use this visual guide for placement of important safety items in your home.
