Crews Save Homes and Orchard From Fast-Moving Hay Field Fire

TVF&R Posted on August 05, 2024

Just after 2:41 p.m., multiple callers reported an advancing brush fire in a hay field, threatening neighboring structures and homes near 28500 Block of SW Laurel Rd in Hillsboro. Based on reports, fire crews upgraded the incident to a first alarm fire to activate additional resources. With dynamic wind conditions and terrain, this incident eventually led to the activation of a second alarm, third alarm, fourth alarm and later a fifth alarm. The upgrade would bring in air resources, ODF, and OSFM. The fire developed to a total size of 30 acres before total extinguishment.

On arrival, firefighters found a fast-moving fire in a hay field that burned through about two acres and spreading into the neighboring property. Crews deployed a progressive hose lay and utilized mobile attacks to slow and control the fire. In addition to the direct fire attack, water shuttle operations were utilized to provide water for extinguishment at the scene. Efforts kept the fire from spreading to multiple nearby structures and hazelnut orchards. Fire was declared under control around 6:30 pm this evening. Firefighters stayed on scene to extinguish hot spots and ensure no additional fire spread.

Some evacuations were required because of the fire, with most of the damage occurring to the hayfields and brush itself. A fire investigator determined the fire was caused by agricultural equipment working in the hay field before it. No injuries were reported.

Today's incident is a reminder that if you live in an area nestled among fields, forests and natural spaces, ensuring you have a 30-foot safety zone around your home where leaves, brush, and other combustibles are eliminated can help firefighters protect your home.

TVF&R was assisted on scene by Hillsboro Fire & Rescue, Cornelius Fire Department, Forest Grove Fire, Gaston Fire Department, Dundee Fire, Washington County Sherriff’s Office deputies, and American Medical Response.
