Just after midnight on April 17, firefighters responded to reports of apartments on fire in the 11000 block of SW Hall Boulevard near Tigard. When they arrived, there was heavy smoke and fire coming from two second-story apartments with fire extending to balconies. Fortunately, residents were able to safely evacuate.
Firefighters were able to knock down the majority of the flames within ten minutes while searching the four units in the building. They spent another hour working to put out hot spots in shared wall spaces, salvaging belongings, clearing smoke and assisting the investigator.
While the exact cause of the fire is undetermined, a fire investigator concluded that the fire started in the wall space near a wood stove. Two upper-story apartments sustained considerable fire damage, and the two units below were damaged by water and smoke. Eight people were displaced, and the American Red Cross provided support at the scene. The apartments had working smoke alarms.
