At 12:51am this morning, a neighbor called 9-1-1 to report a house on fire at 945 NW Joy Ave in Portland. The caller reported flames and heavy smoke from the home and involving at least two cars parked in the driveway. Initial information was that the residents had just arrived home to find the fire and were attempting to use a fire extinguisher and garden hose to put out the fire.
The first arriving unit from North Beaverton Station 61 found heavy flames coming from the home including two vehicles. Crews made an aggressive attack on the fire in the home and the burning vehicles. The attached garage to the home was fully-involved with fire where crews found an additional vehicle consumed by fire. Five total vehicles were damaged by fire.
Crews conducted a complete search of the home and confirmed that no one was inside. One adult male suffered burn injuries to his hands and arms and was transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries. No other injuries were reported. Two adults and two children were displaced by the fire.
A TVF&R investigator is working to determine the cause of the fire and damage estimates.
TVF&R reminds everyone that fire extinguishers may be an effective tool for a small fire but if the fire continues to burn after using a fire extinguisher, exit to safety immediately and call 9-1-1 from a neighboring home. Also be sure to have working smoke alarms in your home and test them regularly. To learn more, please visit www.tvfr.com.
