Multi-Family Housing Fire Reduction

Research and Grant Projects

Apartment Landlord / Smoke Alarm Grant Project
In 2002 Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue
secured a $85,000 federal grant to assist in identifying the barriers to
maintaining working smoke alarms and developing strategies for educating
at-risk populations (low income and non-English speaking). A local
research firm conducted a Focus Group Study with at-risk tenants and
landlords. Using the research, an advertising agency produced mass media
resources and educational materials for landlords.
Today, over 50 apartment complexes and
200 local landlords have partnered with our fire department and have
received free educational materials and/or training.

Stovetop FireStop Pilot
Project
In an attempt to reduce or minimize fires
that start on the stovetop and help keep apartment dwellers safer when
they do, TVF&R has implemented a pilot program with the
StoveTop FireStop at the Greenburg Oaks Apartments in Tigard. The
StoveTop FireStop is a 12-ounce automatic fire extinguisher that
attaches magnetically under the vent hood over a stovetop. When a
stovetop fire occurs and the flames reach the Stovetop FireStop, the
fire suppressing powder is automatically released onto the fire.
Managers and property owners interested in the StoveTop FireStop, should
contact Deputy Fire Marshal Eric
McMullen at 503-612-7000.
