Statistically, firefighting is one of the most dangerous occupations in the world, often
leading to disabling injuries and possible early retirement. Due to the nature of the
job, injuries are inevitable, however, effective implementation of the TVF&R Wellness
Program is intended to decrease the occurrence and severity of illness and injury.
TVF&R is committed to reducing the number and severity of injuries and accidents
both on and off the job. When accidents do happen, it is important that the
District assist employees through a process of rehabilitation that provides
effective and timely recovery and return to work. TVF&R is committed to ensuring
a safe working environment for its employees by taking a proactive role in
preventing future accidents and injuries.
This is accomplished by:
- A comprehensive and effective Wellness Program which identifies key
areas of employee well-being and enhances employee fitness so as to
improve performance and reduce personal illness and injury.
- A physical fitness program designed to enhance employee performance
of essential functions as assigned in their job.
- A strong commitment to safety from both labor and management as
exemplified through the coordination of Wellness programs and initiatives.
- A designated safety officer who provides oversight of all safety-
related issues and concerns.
- An ergonomic analysis of all aspects of the job to look for ways
to redesign the work environment.
- An educational component that begins in the fire academy and continues
throughout the entire career focused on employee improvement in all areas
of wellness and performance.
To help facilitate the return to work of injured or ill employees, TVF&R
has developed a return-to-work program that functions in conjunction with
the rehabilitation program. This program is designed to reduce injury costs
and keep the injured individual involved with the District in a manner
that helps return the employee to active duty as soon as possible.
