The requirements of this component are met through a comprehensive medical examination.
Exams for uniformed personnel are specific to the demands commonly encountered by fire
service employees. Exams for support personnel are designed to meet the health and
wellness needs for their specific positions. In either case, the examination process
is designed to help identify health problems affecting the individual, as well as
problems common to the District.
The annual medical examination is designed to:
- Determine whether an individual is physically and mentally able to
perform essential job duties without undue risk of harm to self or others,
with the assistance of the District physician and in accordance with the
Americans with Disabilities Act.
- Monitor the effects of exposure to specific biological, physical,
or chemical agents as encountered in the workplace and on the job.
- Detect changes in an individual's health that may be related to
harmful working conditions and make the necessary adjustments to
correct such conditions.
- Detect any patterns of disease in the work force that might
indicate underlying work-related problems and make the necessary
adjustments to prevent such conditions.
- Provide employees with information related to occupational
hazards that they may encounter
- Provide a cost-effective investment to the District in the
early detection and prevention of disease and overall health
promotion of employees.
- Comply with federal, state and local requirements related to
the physical requirements of District positions.
