Overview

Training

The demands of emergency service delivery require that all district employees, career and volunteer, be involved in demanding, comprehensive, on-going training programs.  This prepares employees to make critical decisions based on finely honed skills, judgment, and creativity.  The Training Division is the core of these training programs and prepares all firefighters, emergency medical technicians and paramedics to deliver the highest quality service to Fire District patrons. Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue's training programs and materials are recognized and distributed to other fire departments nationally.

The Training Division is accredited through the Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST) to deliver certified training from Firefighter I to Fire Officer II and many specialty areas such as technical rescue, hazardous materials and water rescue. Through outstanding interagency cooperation, many of our initial certification courses earn our employees college credit through Portland Community College.

Training Division staffing consists of two EMS training officers, three fire training officers, an administrative assistant, and a chief training officer. Resources such as learning libraries in each fire station, a state of the art studio and broadcast system, e-learning tools, modern classrooms and two training centers with training props allowing thousands of simulation scenarios, assist our fire fighters and paramedics in becoming the very best the industry has to offer.

Upon hire, each firefighter of Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue is highly trained to exacting standards through a Recruit Academy. Upon completion, continuing education is provided in Emergency Medicine, Wellness, Leadership & Supervision, Specialty Teams and continuing education as required by local, state, and federal regulations. The extensive training is supported by our in-house Media Services department. We believe a highly skilled and trained workforce equipped with reliable and effective response tools will contribute to reducing incident severity.

TVF&R is also committed to providing training to the communities we serve.  For more information, check out our Safety Tips page.
