Once hired, a new Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue firefighter enters an intense
three-month Recruit Academy. New firefighters are trained in:
- Fire Suppression
- EMS Skills
- Hazardous Materials
- Wildland Operations
- District Policies & Procedures
In addition to classroom learning, recruits participate in rigorous physical
fitness training, practical scenarios, continuous testing and evaluation,
and acquire real-life experience through controlled house burns.
Upon completion of the academy, firefighters are assigned to a station
and begin working with a Field Training Officer. Recruit firefighters
must successfully complete three benchmark tests and demonstrate
competency in fire and EMS skills before completing their one-year
probation.
