On Wednesday, February 20, at 2:00 p.m., Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue will recognize Terry Zimmerman for his quick thinking and willingness to administer CPR to his co-worker Bob Kennedy. Bob suffered a heart attack while at work at Western Wood Structures on January 31, 2002. Terry had taken a CPR class just days prior and came to Bob’s aid when he realized he was having a heart attack. The recognition and reunion between Terry, Bob and the firefighters who responded that day will take place at Western Wood Structures located at 20675 S.W. 1075th Avenue in Tualatin.
Public Information Officer Karen Eubanks states, "This incident clearly illustrates the life-saving benefit of CPR. Those first minutes are crucial to the outcome of a patient." Eubanks added, "CPR helps keep a patient alive until emergency responders arrive and administer live-saving defibrillation and drugs."
The incident also serves as a timely reminder for CPR Saturday 2002, an annual event offering FREE CPR classes for the public. The event takes place this Saturday, February 23, from 9 am – 1 pm, at four locations throughout the Portland area, including Merle Davis School (13000 S.W. Farmington Road) in Beaverton. Classes will be held each hour and include recognizing the symptoms of a heart attack and stroke, performing CPR, and clearing the airway of a choking victim. Individuals interested in registering for CPR Saturday 2002 may call the American Heart Association at 1-800-452-9445.
The Fire District also offers CPR classes year-round. Classes are held at three locations each month and cost only $5.00. For more information about these classes call Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue’s CPR Hotline at (503) 625-8194 or visit
