Firefighters to Compete in Seattle Stair Climb; Benefits Finding a Cure for Leukemia

Firefighters are known for saving lives. However, on Sunday, March 18, 2001 it will not be at the scene of a fire or medical emergency in which a life may be saved, but in Seattle at the annual Stair Climb Competition which benefits leukemia. This year marks the 5th year that Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue firefighters will compete in this rigorous athletic event which supports the fight to find a cure for leukemia. The challenge – to climb 69 floors in complete firefighter gear, including self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA). Last year Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue took 7th place out of 65 teams entered in the competition.

This year’s team of approximately 20 firefighters includes individuals ranging in age from 21-50. Team members have spent the past several months training for the event by climbing the U.S. Bank Tower (43 floors) in Portland on weekends. The year’s team is challenging local sportscasters and sportswriters to participate in an upcoming weekend practice session with the team.

Team members are also encouraging the community to join their efforts by making a donation. Checks (made out to: Leukemia Foundation) may be mailed to Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue, 20665 S.W. Blanton Street, Aloha, Oregon 97007.
