(Free Safety Seat Checkpoint Scheduled at Beaverton City Library)

Beaverton Police Department and Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue are hosting a free child safety seat checkpoint on Thursday evening, September 13th, 4:00 p.m.- 7:00 p.m., in the west parking lot of the Beaverton City Library, 12375 SW Fifth St. (near the intersection with Hall Blvd.)

Most people assume that they are using their car seat properly, however, national statistics and the results of recent local inspection clinics have shown that well over 85% of car seats are being used and installed incorrectly, creating a potential for greater injury in a crash. At the drive-through checkpoint, child safety seats will be inspected for appropriate fit for the child, secure installation, and potential manufacturer’s recalls.

Effective January 1, 2002, recent changes to the state law specific to child safety seat use will require that children up to 6 years of age and 60 pounds must ride properly in an approved child safety system. This change will increase the use of booster seats, which are designed to help children over 40 pounds fit into the adult lap and shoulder belt correctly until they grow taller. At the checkpoint, parents can obtain information on the types and benefits of booster seats that will help them meet the new criteria and provide the best protection for their children.
