Tualatin Valley Fire Fighters to "Fill the Boot" for New York Relief Effort
Local firefighters will take to various locations around the Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue service area this Friday, Saturday, and Sunday (10/19-20-21) in an effort to raise funds for the New York Firefighters 9-11 Disaster Relief Fund. Using the "fill the boot" technique historically used to raise funds for the Muscular Dystrophy Association, the members of International Association of Fire Fighters Local 1660 will take up places in parking lots from Oregon City to Aloha, asking passersby to drop money in fire boots.
The funds collected will be donated directly to the New York Firefighters 9-11 Disaster Relief Fund, a non-profit organization established by the International Association of Fire Fighters and a leading fire magazine. The fund provides support to the surviving family members of New York City firefighters killed or missing in the September 11 attack on the World Trade Center. More information on the fund can be found at www.firehouse.com/terrorist/fund.html
Steve Fisher, coordinator of the event, notes that firefighters are grateful to the Muscular Dystrophy Association for their support of the fundraising effort.
"Historically, ‘Fill the Boot’ has been an MDA fundraiser," says Fisher. "Given the recent tragedy, however, the local MDA organization told us to feel free to direct our efforts this year towards helping our fellow firefighters in New York City."
Current plans call for firefighters to be out collecting at the following locations: the Oregon City Fred Meyer; the Safeway, Albertson’s, and Zupan’s stores in West Linn; Lamb’s Thriftway in Wilsonville; Hollywood Video in Tualatin; the Sherwood Albertson’s; Tigard Home Depot, Safeway in Aloha; the Barrow’s Road Albertson’s in Beaverton (Saturday and Sunday only); and Tower Records in Beaverton. Collection hours for the effort will be from 8 am to 1 pm.
