Fire Damages West Linn Home; Injures Firefighter

A fire early Wednesday caused an estimated $200,000 damage to a West Linn home and sent a Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue firefighter to the hospital. Firefighters from Lake Oswego and TVF&R responded to 18127 Upper Midhill Drive shortly before 6:30 a.m. after multiple calls to 9-1-1 reported a fire at that location.

The involved home is a two-story frame house with a deck built onto the rear, and was owned and occupied by David Goldenberg, who resided there with two roommates. All three men were home at the time of the fire, but escaped without injury prior to the arrival of firefighters.

Seven units from Lake Oswego and TVF&R responded to the incident with an estimated 25 firefighters. On arrival, firefighters saw that the fire had already spread through the home’s attic area. Firefighters quickly knocked down the main body of fire, but continued to fight spot fires in the attic until shortly after 7 a.m. Evidence suggests that the fire began on the deck at the rear of the home, burned up the outside wall and entered the attic through the eaves. Fire also entered the home’s kitchen and living area though a door from the deck. The fire caused extensive damage to the home and its contents, with preliminary damage estimates in the $200,000 range.

One firefighter was injured in the fire. TVF&R Lieutenant Kelly Bach, 32, was struck by a falling piece of ceiling while working on the second floor of the home. He was taken to Providence Saint Vincent Medical Center, where he was treated and released.

Investigators believe the fire to be accidental in nature but had not confirmed a specific cause by mid-day Wednesday.
