(Beaverton Elementary School Fire Deemed Suspicious)

Fire Investigators from Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue and Oregon State Police believe the cause of a two-alarm fire at Beaver Acres Elementary School (2125 S.W. 170th Avenue, Beaverton) to be suspicious in nature. Investigators have pinpointed where the fire began, however, are not releasing details so as not to compromise the investigation. Investigators are asking anyone with information about the fire to call 1-800-452-7888.

The fire was first reported just before 9 p.m. Saturday night. The call came into the 911 Center as a barkdust fire next to the school. One engine company was dispatched who, upon arrival, found fire on the exterior and interior of the building. They immediately called for a box alarm bringing additional crews to the scene and made an interior attack with hoselines. Approximately 15 minutes later, with heavy smoke still present, a second-alarm was called to help check for fire extension within the 7,000 square foot building. Approximately 25 firefighters were utilized at the scene. The fire was brought under control within 30 minutes.

Investigators from Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue and Oregon State Police spent most of Sunday digging through the charred remains of the affected modular building. The building contained six classrooms that were home to the school’s fourth and fifth graders. School officials cancelled school on Monday and Tuesday for the affected students. Until such time that the classrooms are habitable, students will be placed into temporary classrooms in the school’s gymnasium. School officials plan to meet early Tuesday afternoon to decide which day students will come back to school. Parents will be contacted following that meeting.

The fire caused approximately $350,000 damage to the building and contents.
